Totemo Meaning in Japanese

-->

Totemo means “very” in Japanese and is a favorite amongst those that are learning Japanese for the first time.

The following are a few examples of Totemo usage:

仕事はとても大変です。 = My job is very tiring. (shigoto wa totemo taihen desu)

あなたはとてもきれいです。 = You are very beautiful. (anata wa totemo kirei desu)

There are some people that think totemo is an old word and overused, but when speaking a foreign language, the most important thing that matters is communication.  If you can’t remember the other ways of saying  “very” in Japanese, don’t be afraid to use totemo.

Totemo is a great word because it’s easy for English speakers to pronounce and remember.  So, unlike what some people say, don’t be afraid to use specific words.  If you know how to use totemo, then you have a great tool to help speak Japanese.

    There are some words in Japanese that when they are written they are usually done so in kana. きれい is one such example. Another one that you might not have been familiar with that has a kanji form is “ここ”, the same koko used for “here” from the “here, there” series. It has the kanji 此処.

    One reason why some words are written in kana instead of kanji is that it is more convenient for the writer. Writing “ここ” in Japanese is far more simpler than writing the stroke soaked 此処 koko kanji amalgamation.

    When first learning Japanese, my first preference was to make everything into kanji too just because I thought it looked a lot cooler that way; but the important thing is to communicate information, and ここ does it faster than 此処.
